Squirrels of Toronto

White Eastern Grey Squirrels

White squirrels are a result of genetic aberations.  The white colouring may be a result of albinism which also causes red eyes or of a genetic mutation that causes white fur.

For years a colony of white squirrels has been making Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto its home. In July 2016, one of these white squirrels was accidentally electrocuted.  At the time it looked like this was the last white squirrel at Trinity Bellwoods; however, more sightings have been reported since then.

The presence of these squirrels in this area of Toronto is commemorated in a street name:  White Squirrel Way and they have are also celebrated at the White Squirrel Coffee Shop located at 907 Queen St. W. Toronto.

Toronto is not the only town with white squirrels. Exeter is also well-known for its white squirrels.
