Firstly, conformation does not equate to being ethically sound. Many may argue that the women of this century have freedom to choose how they represent themselves, and which societal values to embrace. However, the normalization of sexualized women limits true choice. Each member of society conforms to some set of societal values that reciprocate acceptance, and “at a sociocultural level, the results warn of the risk of naturalizing the sexualization of the female image as a legitimate form of visibility and success (Sacoto et al. 11). So while women do have a choice, these portrayals shape expectations on what gains women acceptance within society. The consequences of this over-sexualization will also be discussed, considering its impact on youth in relation to the epidemic of self-sexualization. Breaking down the issue from a macro-level societal concern to the micro-level consequences, intended to highlight the enduring effects of fashion marketing on both culture, and the individual.
